One of the most popular questions we get from our friends and our readers are "What is the story behind the name Penny & Dash?" along with "Who is Penny and who is Dash?" This may be a surprise to some of you or maybe not a surprise at all if you personally know us, but the name of our blog stems from the two loves of our lives - Penny (Melissa's cat) and Dasher (Jessica's dog). Before the official launch of our lifestyle blog back in April, we spent a lot of time and had many discussions about the name of the blog before settling on Penny & Dash. We wanted a name that we could grow with as well as one that didn't limit us to a specific platform and since we both love our pets to the moon back (also the fact that they both had the cutest names that sounded even more adorable when combined), it only seemed right that the blog would be named after our beloved friends. For this Halloween, we decided to skip out on showcasing costumes, and instead bring this post to a farm with Penny and Dasher for a day of fun and pumpkin picking!
Mel (Penny): Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am completely head over heels in love and obsessed with a little snappy, 10 pound fur baby by the name of Ms. Penny. I have been begging my parents for a cat ever since I was 7 years old and was once this close to actually getting one before my sister forgot to make her bed one morning (back then we had a deal with my parents that if we made our beds for a month, we would get a cat). Nonetheless, through time (about 10 years), I eventually not only forgave my sister, but saved up enough money to buy myself a pet during the summer of my sophomore year - literally one of the best perks of adulting. Penny is a 2-year-old Ragdoll who spends most of her time sleeping, playing in boxes, and nipping at my ankles every time she is hungry or just plain bored. Like the rest of my family, she has a very dominant and headstrong personality, but after a day of craziness and feistiness, she will always end up curled up in my lap ready for her bedtime.
Jess: (Dasher): I remember back in middle school how much I always wanted a dog, specifically a puppy that would stay small and become my lap companion (not going to lie, Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell was the inspiration back during "The Simple Life"). It really took some time to convince my parents to be open to the idea of having a pet in the house, but we finally brought him home as a two month old puppy in July 2009. I've always had the name Dasher in mind for a white dog, although I bounced back a lot of names with my friends back in the day before I got him (I actually asked Melissa's boyfriend back during freshman year in high school health class before they started dating for his opinion on names - time flies doesn't it?). Dasher definitely has a big personality for such a small 7-pound dog, and anyone who's met him knows he can be a bit feisty. He does, however, have a big heart and loves to cuddle. (P.s. He is a purebred Maltese)
Love Always,
Jessica & Melissa
