Mel's First Visit to Prague

July 2, 2016

Prague was the second place I visited during my one month vacation in Europe and a post on this beautiful city is long overdue. A few of my friends, Jess included, have always raved about Prague and how it may be one of their favorite European cities they have ever visited. Needless to say, my expectations were set pretty high. The first full day was spent exploring the Old Town Square, which remains one of Prague's main tourist attractions. I spent the afternoon walking along the cobblestone streets, stopping every so often to admire the gothic architecture of this historic square and of course, to take a few snacks and gelato breaks. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time and didn't have the opportunity to go inside the Old Town Hall or St. Nicholas Church, but I recommend anyone who is visiting Prague to do so! I did, however, have the chance to visit the top of Charles Bridge (last 2 pictures of the Old Town Square segment) which had the most breathtaking views. This is a must do in Old Town Square since it gives you a pretty good bird eye's view of the city of Prague. I spent the rest of the late afternoon walking through the streets of the New Town to get back to my hotel and it was so interesting to see the change in architectural style as I moved away from Old Town Square.

I visited Prague Castle during the last day of my stay in Prague and it was the most tiring yet enriching day of my European trip. Prague Castle is separated into several historic buildings that is composed of several churches (St. Vitus Cathedral & St. George's Basilica), palaces/museums (Old Royal Palace, Story of Prague's Castle, Powder Tower, Rosenberg Palace) and servant's dwellings (Golden Lane). It is definitely a full day's itinerary and you do need to buy tickets to see each "attraction", so I advise to do some research beforehand to determine which "attractions" you are most interested in.

And that's a wrap for Prague! Vienna and Hallstatt were the next leg of my trip, so please read my posts here and here, respectively, if you are interested in reading about my time in Austria!

Tips, Tricks, and FYI's

  • Take a horse and carriage ride in Old Town if you would like to see the whole historic square without having to walk too much.

  • Pay to visit the top of Charles Bridge - the view is worth it (trust me)

  • Get an early start to the day when visiting Prague Castle and bring lots of water!

  • Buy the family ticket if you are traveling with your parents - it gives you access to the majority of the attractions at a discounted price.
